    The Compliance Officer Role

    The Compliance Officer position is pivotal in ensuring adherence to health, safety, quality, and environmental standards. The successful candidate will play a key role in upholding regulatory compliance, minimizing risks, and fostering a safe and efficient workplace.

    This role encompasses a range of responsibilities, from technical consultation and training to inspections and audits. By addressing critical compliance requirements, the officer will contribute to creating a safer and more secure environment for employees, clients, and other stakeholders.

    Key Qualifications and Experience

    Excellerate JHI is seeking a candidate who brings:

    • A Grade 12 certificate.
    • A graduate qualification in Health and Safety Management or a related field (NQF Level 5-7).
    • At least two years’ experience as a Health and Safety Officer post-graduation.

    Primary Responsibilities

    The Compliance Officer will oversee a diverse array of tasks aimed at ensuring adherence to the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act, National Building Regulations, and other applicable standards and legislation. Below is an outline of their main duties:

    Compliance Oversight:

    • Guide the identification and reporting of legal appointments and establish functioning health and safety committees.
    • Develop and maintain emergency preparedness teams.
    • Implement group safety procedures within designated areas.
    • Conduct inspections to ensure alignment with safe work procedures and report deviations.

    Incident Management:

    • Ensure accurate reporting and documentation of SHEQ (Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality) incidents, including unsafe acts, injuries, near misses, and property damage.
    • Support facilities management in completing site-specific risk assessments.

    Inspection and Monitoring:

    • Conduct regular inspections and ensure timely testing of equipment such as fire systems, alarms, lifts, and electrical installations.
    • Assist facilities managers in organizing legally mandated surveys and assessments on hazardous substances, noise, air quality, and other factors.

    Vendor and Tenant Compliance:

    • Conduct health and safety reviews of vendor files.
    • Perform inspections of tenant spaces to verify compliance with safety standards.

    Managing High-Risk Activities:

    • Oversee controls for high-risk activities such as working at heights, confined spaces, electrical tasks, hot works, and excavations.
    • Verify compliance with permits issued for these activities through ad-hoc inspections.

    Training and Awareness:

    • Maintain a training register and coordinate health and safety training requirements with HR.
    • Conduct toolbox talks and awareness programs to promote a culture of safety.
    • Oversee health and safety inductions for new and existing staff.

    Audits and Non-Conformance Resolution:

    • Participate in internal and external health and safety audits.
    • Assist sites in resolving non-conformances identified during audits.
    • Manage and update compliance findings registers to track progress.
