    The University of South Africa (UNISA) has announced a recruitment drive for online independent contractors to serve as E-Tutors in the College of Science, Engineering, and Technology (CSET).     About UNISA’s E-Tutor Role

    The primary responsibilities of an E-Tutor include:

    • Providing students with academic and technical support in an online environment.
    • Facilitating virtual tutorials and managing students’ online learning experiences.
    • Encouraging peer-to-peer interaction among students.
    • Responding to student inquiries within 48 hours.

    Minimum Requirements

    To be considered for the position, applicants must meet the following criteria:

    1. Educational Qualification
      • A Master’s degree in Computer Science (PhD preferred).
      • A research reflection and portfolio demonstrating both academic and non-academic contributions.
    2. Technical Skills and Equipment
      • Advanced computer literacy with proficiency in online teaching tools.
      • Strong internet access (self-funded).
      • Own necessary software packages required for teaching (e.g., word processing, internet browsers).
      • No training will be provided for using software tools, so applicants must already possess these skills.
    3. Teaching Experience
      • Minimum of three years of teaching experience.
      • Experience in an Open Distance e-Learning (ODeL) environment is an added advantage.
      • Former UNISA students familiar with the myUnisa platform are preferred.
    4. Interpersonal and Professional Skills
      • Excellent communication skills (primarily text-based via Moodle and discussion forums).
      • Commitment to deadlines and a passion for student-centered learning.
      • Friendly, patient, and sensitive to student diversity.

    Modules Available for E-Tutors

    E-Tutor positions are available for the following courses under the Department of Computer Science:

    • COS1501 – Theoretical Computer Science 1
    • COS1511 – Introduction to Programming 1
    • COS1521 – Computer Systems: Fundamental Concepts
    • COS2614 – Programming Contemporary Concepts
    • COS2626 – Computer Networks I
    • COS2661 – Formal Logic 2
    • EUC1501 – End-User Computing (Theory)

    Employment Conditions

    E-Tutors at UNISA are appointed as independent contractors. Therefore:

    • They are not employees of UNISA.
    • They do not receive benefits such as medical aid, office space, equipment, or leave.
    • They must provide their own computer, internet access, and workspace.
    • They are expected to work five days a week, with a minimum of one hour per day dedicated to online teaching and marking.

    Gross Remuneration:
    The contract offers R11,202.80 for the duration of the agreement.
