Primary Responsibilities of the Safety Officer

- Conduct risk assessments and develop Safe Work Procedures to minimize workplace hazards.
- Perform Planned Task Observations (PTOs) to assess safe work practices.
4. Safety Compliance Monitoring
- Monitor the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Oversee legal appointments, competencies, fire equipment, and medical fitness requirements.
5. Incident Investigation and Reporting
- Report and investigate workplace incidents.
- Generate detailed incident reports and conduct root cause analysis.
- Communicate findings and follow up on corrective actions.
6. SHE Site Inspections and Compliance Audits
- Conduct routine site inspections to ensure compliance with SHE regulations.
- Maintain registers, checklists, and training matrices for safety compliance.
7. Client and Employee Safety Communication
- Attend client safety meetings to discuss workplace risks and preventive measures.
- Establish and lead Bidvest Prestige’s site safety committee, ensuring quarterly meetings are held.
- Conduct toolbox talks, informal training, and SHE awareness programs.
Minimum Qualifications and Skills Required
To qualify for the Safety Officer position, applicants must meet the following criteria:
Educational Requirements
- Matric (Senior Certificate) is a mandatory qualification.
- A valid South African Driver’s License is essential.
Professional Competencies
- Strong experience in risk assessments and incident investigation.
- Certification in SAMTRAC, Incident Investigation, Legal Liability, and Fall Protection Plan Development.
- Knowledge of Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA) and Root Cause Analysis.
- Experience in Bidvest Prestige operations across various industries.
Technical and Software Skills
- Proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and MS Outlook at an intermediate level.
- Sound understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act, Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases (COID) Act, and relevant SANS standards.
