    In an effort to strengthen infrastructure maintenance and improve water services delivery, the Joe Gqabi District Municipality has opened applications for skilled plumbers and semi-skilled meter installers under the Extended Public Works Programme (EPWP). This initiative is a 12-month fixed-term contract aimed at promoting job creation and service delivery across various towns within the district.

    The Joe Gqabi District, a Category 4 municipality headquartered in Barkly East, includes the towns of Walter Sisulu (Burgersdorp, Steynsburg, and Venterstad), Maletswai and James Calata, Senqu (Lady Grey, Sterkspruit, Barkly East, Rhodes, and Rossouw), and Elundini (Ugie, Nqanqarhu, Tlokoeng, and rural parts of Tsolo and Qumbu).

    The recruitment drive offers job opportunities strictly to residents within the specific towns where the vacancies are available, ensuring community-focused empowerment.

    Positions Available

    1. Skilled Plumbers

    A total of seven skilled plumber positions are available:

    • Maletswai – 2
    • Burgersdorp – 1
    • Nqanqarhu – 2
    • Tlokoeng – 1
    • Sterkspruit – 1

    Successful skilled plumber applicants will earn a monthly stipend of R10 830, an all-inclusive amount. However, no additional fringe benefits are provided.

    Minimum Requirements:

    • Grade 12 (Matric) or equivalent qualification
    • Trade Test Certificate in Plumbing (Red Seal)
    • At least 3 years of experience in plumbing maintenance, water reticulation, and infrastructure repairs
    • Knowledge of municipal water and sanitation systems
    • A valid Code EB driver’s license
    • Physical fitness and willingness to work in different locations under various weather conditions

    Additional Skills:

    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
    • Good interpersonal communication
    • Commitment to service delivery and quality workmanship
    • Willingness to work extended hours and under pressure

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Maintain and repair water and sanitation infrastructure
    • Conduct plumbing inspections
    • Detect and repair leaks and burst pipes
    • Ensure compliance with municipal standards

    2. Semi-Skilled Meter Installers

    A total of eight meter installer positions are available:

    • Maletswai – 2
    • Burgersdorp – 1
    • Nqanqarhu – 2
    • Tlokoeng – 1
    • Sterkspruit – 2

    These posts offer a monthly stipend of R6 498, also an all-inclusive amount, with no fringe benefits.

    Minimum Requirements:

    • Grade 10 or equivalent
    • Experience in water meter installation and maintenance (1 year preferred)
    • Knowledge of water systems and basic plumbing
    • Ability to handle manual tools and work physically
    • Readiness to travel within the district

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Install and replace water meters
    • Assist in leak detection and report faulty meters
    • Ensure proper meter connections
    • Support plumbers in improving municipal water services
