The Western Cape Government has officially opened applications for its highly anticipated Graduate Internship Programme for 2025/2026. This programme is a vital youth development initiative aimed at providing unemployed South African graduates, particularly those residing in the Western Cape, with practical work experience to help launch their careers.
The programme offers internships across various provincial government departments, lasting between three to twenty-four months. The objective is clear: to equip young graduates with the skills, experience, and networks they need to become more competitive in the job market.
Who Can Apply?
The Graduate Internship Programme is open to South African citizens aged between 20 and 35 years who live in the Western Cape. Applicants must have completed a minimum qualification ranging from a Certificate (NQF Level 5), Diploma (NQF Level 6), Degree (NQF Level 7), to Postgraduate qualifications (NQF Level 8 and above).
The programme particularly encourages applications from graduates who are financially constrained and lack a professional network or guidance in making informed career choices. Preference will also be given to candidates who studied at institutions within the Western Cape.
What Does the Programme Offer?
Interns will receive on-the-job training in one of several government departments, including but not limited to:
- Agriculture
- Police Oversight and Community Safety
- Cultural Affairs and Sport
- Department of the Premier
- Economic Development and Tourism
- Environmental Affairs & Development Planning
- Department of Infrastructure
- Local Government
- Mobility Department
- Provincial Treasury
- Social Development
This diverse range of departments ensures that graduates from various academic backgrounds can find an area that suits their career interests.
Benefits of Joining the Programme
The internship provides much-needed practical experience that many young South African graduates lack when entering the job market. Participants will gain valuable skills, build their professional networks, and acquire references that can strengthen their CVs.
In addition to technical skills and work experience, interns will benefit from career awareness exposure. This support will help them make more informed decisions about their future career paths and open doors to new opportunities.
Application Process and Requirements
Interested candidates must apply online via the Western Cape Government’s careers portal. Applications close on 2 June 2025, and only online applications will be accepted—no late, emailed, or faxed CVs will be considered.
The application process has two phases:
- Phase 1: Registration
Applicants must first create an account on the portal, provide the required personal information, and upload documents such as their CV, identity document, and academic results. After submission, applicants will receive an email to verify their address. - Phase 2: Internship Application
Once registration is complete, candidates can locate the Graduate Internship Programme advertisement and submit their application by answering the required questions. A confirmation email will follow upon successful submission.
Candidates who have passed their final examinations are eligible to apply, and all qualifications and personal information will be verified.

Why This Programme Matters
Youth unemployment remains a significant challenge in South Africa. Many graduates struggle to find employment due to lack of experience. This Graduate Internship Programme addresses this gap by providing a structured environment where young people can gain practical exposure, learn from professionals, and grow their confidence.
By offering internships across key government departments, the programme not only helps individuals but also strengthens the public service by developing a future pipeline of skilled professionals.
