The University of Johannesburg, in partnership with the Wholesale and Retail Sector Education and Training Authority (W&R SETA), is hosting the Wholesale & Retail Leadership Chair of Gauteng. The W&R SETA aims to address the skills development needs of the Wholesale and Retail (W&R) sector through the implementation of learning programs, disbursement of grants and bursaries, and monitoring of education and training.
About W&R SETA UJ Postgraduate Bursary
The W&R SETA UJ Postgraduate Bursary is open to students who intend to pursue Master’s and Ph.D. studies or who are currently enrolled in Master’s and Ph.D. programs. Preference is given to research in the following areas:
- Wholesale and Retail
- Retail Business Management
- Retail Marketing
- Wholesale Business Development
Eligibility Requirements
To be considered for the W&R SETA UJ Postgraduate Bursary, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Citizenship: Must be a South African Citizen or Permanent Resident.
- For Master’s Degree Studies: Must hold an Honours degree in Marketing or Retailing with a minimum of 60% for Research Methodology on NQF level 8 and an overall degree average of 60% or higher.
- For Ph.D. Degree Studies: Must hold a Master’s degree in Marketing or Retailing with a minimum of 65% for the Master’s degree and a minimum of 60% for Research Methodology on NQF level 8.
- Research Proposal: Must have an approved Master’s or Ph.D. proposal focusing on the preferred areas listed above.
- Registration: Proof of formal registration at the University of Johannesburg.
Funding Structure
The W&R SETA UJ Postgraduate Bursary is designed to alleviate the financial burden of postgraduate studies, ensuring that students can focus entirely on their research and academic pursuits. The bursary provides comprehensive financial support, covering the following costs:
- Annual Tuition Fees: The bursary will cover the full cost of tuition fees for the academic year. This ensures that students do not have to worry about the high cost of university education.
- Data Collection Costs: Research often involves extensive data collection, which can be costly. The bursary includes funds to cover expenses related to data gathering, including surveys, fieldwork, and the purchase of necessary research materials.
- Language Editing: Academic writing at the postgraduate level requires high standards of language proficiency. The bursary provides funds for professional language editing services, ensuring that students can produce high-quality theses and dissertations.
- Research Materials and Resources: In addition to data collection, the bursary may also cover the costs of essential research materials and resources, such as books, journal subscriptions, and specialized software.
- Conference Attendance: Engaging with the academic community through conferences is crucial for postgraduate students. The bursary might also provide support for attending relevant conferences and workshops, enabling students to present their research and network with other scholars.
- Miscellaneous Costs: Other incidental expenses related to the successful completion of postgraduate studies, such as printing and binding of the thesis, may also be covered under this bursary.

How to Apply: New Enrolments
- Visit the UJ Department of Marketing Management website: Follow the full application procedure on the Master’s and Ph.D. webpage and submit all required documentation by 31 October of the year of application.
- Proposal Acceptance: If your proposal is accepted by the Department Research and Ethics Committee (DREC), send an email to wrseta@uj.ac.za. You will be contacted with the necessary documentation to complete the W&R SETA UJ Postgraduate Bursary application.
