    The eThekwini Municipality has announced an exciting employment opportunity for the position of Brigadier within the Community and Emergency Services Department. This permanent position, graded at T17, falls under the Operations Department, Outer West Region, and reports directly to the Deputy Municipal Police Commissioner (Operations).

    This role offers an attractive remuneration package ranging between R1,412,172 and R1,805,954 per annum, along with benefits such as a housing subsidy, medical aid, pension fund, locomotion allowance, leave benefits, and a 13th cheque. The successful candidate will be stationed in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.

    Job Purpose

    The Brigadier is tasked with overseeing crime prevention, traffic enforcement, and by-law compliance within the Metropolitan Police Service. The incumbent will be responsible for consolidating crime-related strategies, ensuring municipal by-law enforcement, and providing operational leadership to Metro Police Headquarters Command and Operational Command.

    The role requires strategic planning and policy development to align the Metro Police’s operational framework with the municipality’s mandate of protecting its citizens and enforcing municipal laws. The candidate will manage operations, implement best practices, and oversee information integration to optimize crime prevention and law enforcement activities.

    Key Responsibilities

    The appointed Brigadier will undertake several critical responsibilities to ensure operational efficiency and law enforcement excellence:

    1. Operational Command & Strategic Leadership
      • Oversee Metro Police Headquarters Command and Operational Command.
      • Formulate strategic directives for the Metro Police under the guidance of the Head of Metro Police.
      • Develop and implement short-, medium-, and long-term objectives, action plans, and performance targets.
    2. Training & Development
      • Manage the overall training and development of Metro Police personnel.
      • Research and plan innovative training strategies to enhance policing effectiveness.
    3. Public Relations & Community Engagement
      • Represent the Metro Police in public forums, addressing concerns from the community, institutions, and other departments.
      • Attend to unresolved public complaints that require senior-level intervention.
    4. Logistics & Asset Management
      • Oversee the management of departmental assets and resources allocated to Metro Police.
      • Ensure optimal utilization and maintenance of police equipment and vehicles.
    5. Budget Management
      • Control and direct the capital and operational budgets of Metro Police Headquarters and operational commands.
      • Ensure financial accountability and effective allocation of resources.
    6. Supervision & Personnel Management
      • Provide direction, supervision, and support to subordinate staff.
      • Foster an environment of professionalism, ethics, and teamwork within the police force.

    Essential Requirements

    Applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications and experience requirements:

    • Diploma (NQF Level 6) in Policing or an equivalent qualification.
    • Registered Traffic Officer Certification.
    • Valid motor vehicle driver’s license.
    • Firearm Competency Certification.
    • A minimum of 8 years of relevant policing experience, with at least 3 years at the rank of Colonel.
    • Computer Literacy.

    Legal & Special Conditions

    This appointment will be conducted in accordance with Section 64 of the South African Police Service Act 68 of 1995, as amended by the South African Police Service Amendment Act 83 of 1998. The candidate must not have any prior criminal convictions.

    Preferred Requirements

    While there are no additional preferred requirements, candidates who possess advanced leadership training, additional policing certifications, or postgraduate qualifications in law enforcement or public administration may have an advantage.
