    Minimum Requirements

    To qualify for the Councillor Vacancy at the Gauteng Department of Health, candidates must meet the following requirements:

    • Educational Qualification:
      • A Bachelor’s degree or Honours degree in Psychology from an accredited institution.
    • Professional Registration:
      • Current registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Registered Counsellor or Psychometrist.
    • Experience Levels Based on Grading:
      • Grade 1: Registration with HPCSA as a Counsellor or Psychometrist.
      • Grade 2: A minimum of 8 years of appropriate experience after registration with the HPCSA as a Counsellor.
      • Grade 3: A minimum of 16 years of appropriate experience after registration with the HPCSA as a Counsellor.
    • Additional Skills and Requirements:
      • Valid driver’s license.
      • Proficiency in computer use and presentation skills.
      • Competence in brief intervention skills, counselling, trauma debriefing, group facilitation, presentation, risk assessment, report writing, networking, stress tolerance, adaptability, problem-solving, and the ability to work independently or within a team.

    Key Responsibilities

    As a Councillor, you will play a crucial role in the provision and enhancement of mental health services. Your duties will include, but are not limited to:

    1. Mental Health Services Provision:
      • Ensure adequate capacity for mental health screening, referral, and care in Primary Health Care (PHC) clinics.
      • Strengthen community mental health services through active engagement and support.
    2. Capacity Building:
      • Empower service users and their families to provide self-help and peer-led services, including support groups.
    3. Promotion and Prevention:
      • Advocate for mental health awareness and implement prevention strategies in line with national and provincial priorities.
    4. Routine Screening and Management:
      • Conduct regular screenings for mental illnesses across all developmental stages, from childhood to adulthood.
      • Manage non-complex mental health conditions through brief interventions, supportive counselling, debriefing, individual, and group counselling sessions.
    5. Adherence to Standards:
      • Maintain compliance with HPCSA standards and departmental policies.
    6. Support and Mentoring:
      • Provide guidance and mentorship to Registered Counsellors, coordinating and assigning duties accordingly.
      • Facilitate mental health support groups and participate in relevant meetings and training sessions.
    7. Performance Management:
      • Comply with the Performance Management and Development system and report directly to a Clinical Psychologist.
