    Role Overview: Dental Assistant

    The Dental Assistant will play a key role in supporting dental professionals by assisting with general and specialist dental procedures, maintaining high hygiene standards, and facilitating patient administration processes. This position is vital in ensuring that dental procedures are conducted efficiently while prioritizing patient safety and comfort.

    Key Responsibilities

    The selected candidate will be expected to:

    Clinical Assistance & Infection Control

    • Work within their scope of practice while staying updated with current industry trends to maintain professional competency.
    • Take personal accountability for all decisions made and actions taken in patient care.
    • Ensure the dental room meets hygiene standards and that infection control protocols are strictly followed regarding instrument sterilization and equipment maintenance.
    • Assist dentists in all clinical procedures, ensuring smooth workflow and adherence to Intercare’s protocols.
    • Handle laboratory work, including lab slip completion, specimen collection, and return processes.

    Consumables & Equipment Management

    • Maintain an adequate supply of dental consumables and equipment, ensuring economical usage.
    • Monitor equipment functionality and report any technical failures that may pose risks to patients or staff.

    Patient Care & Confidentiality

    • Engage with patients professionally, ensuring their concerns are addressed and that safe dental practices are followed.
    • Maintain confidentiality and uphold patients’ dignity and safety at all times.
    • Ensure that medical waste, human tissue, and expired medicine are disposed of according to legal regulations.

    Administration & Documentation

    • Ensure that all patient records and documentation comply with legal and company policies.
    • Assist with treatment quotations, using treatment codes for advanced dental procedures.
    • Maintain accurate records of all procedures and laboratory work.

    Minimum Requirements

    To qualify for this role, candidates must meet the following requirements:

    • Grade 12 certificate (Matric)
    • Completion of an approved training course in dental assisting or an equivalent combination of training and experience
    • Registration with the HPCSA (Health Professions Council of South Africa) as a Registered Dental Assistant
    • Knowledge of dental terminology, clinical procedures, and infection control protocols
    • Ability to work in a customer-focused service environment
    • Basic computer proficiency, particularly in MS Office
    • Familiarity with GoodX software (an advantage)
    • Knowledge of treatment codes and specialized dental procedures
