The Free State Provincial Government has announced its 2025 Full-Time Bursary Program aimed at supporting deserving youth in the province. With a focus on critical and scarce skill fields, the initiative provides an incredible opportunity for students who aspire to pursue higher education but face financial constraints.

The bursary aligns with the government’s vision to develop a skilled workforce that can boost both the provincial and national economy. If you’re a resident of the Free State with dreams of studying further, this bursary could be your golden ticket.

    Who Can Apply?

The bursary program is open to South African citizens residing in the Free State who meet specific selection criteria. To ensure fairness and prioritize the most deserving candidates, the bursaries are divided into three categories:

    1. Category A – Top Achievers:
      • Applicants must have been identified by the Free State Department of Education as top-performing learners.
      • Household income must not exceed R600,000 annually.
      • Fields of study must fall within critical and scarce skills areas, such as:
        • STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
        • Commerce-related fields: Actuarial Science, BCom in Accounting, and Economics.
        • Psychological studies: Clinical and forensic psychology, developmental psychology focusing on early childhood development (ECD).
      • Other areas covered include skills that support the Economic Reconstruction and Recovery Plan and the Provincial Work Skills Plan.
    2. Category B – Missing Middle:
      • Applicants from households earning between R50,000 and R70,000 annually.
      • Applicants must demonstrate academic potential, achieving at least 50% in Mathematics and Science (or other relevant subjects).
    3. Category C – Marginalized Students:
      • This category targets students from low-income backgrounds with no breadwinner or household income.

    What Fields Are Prioritized?

The bursary aims to address fields with a shortage of skills both provincially and nationally. Applicants must select qualifications in fields such as:

    • Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
    • Commerce-related fields (e.g., Actuarial Science, Accounting, and Economics).
    • Psychological studies (e.g., Clinical and Forensic Psychology, or Developmental Studies focusing on ECD).
    • Other scarce and critical skills needed for the provincial economy.

These fields were carefully chosen to align with the Free State’s Economic Reconstruction and Recovery Plan, ensuring that graduates can meaningfully contribute to the province’s growth.
