Key Responsibilities
The HR Consultant’s role spans across various facets of HR, from strategy implementation and talent management to learning and development and stakeholder engagement. The key responsibilities include:
1. Development and Implementation of Strategy
The HR Consultant will participate in regional and business unit management meetings and strategic planning sessions to gain insights into the organization’s goals and requirements. By analyzing the effectiveness of current HR practices, the incumbent will work with senior HR colleagues to design and implement interventions that enhance leadership styles and organizational culture.
2. Talent Attraction and Retention
The HR Consultant will manage the talent acquisition process from identifying vacancies to facilitating interviews and background checks. Collaborating with the line manager and HRBP Lead, the incumbent will develop recruitment strategies, prepare onboarding packs, and provide guidance on compensation and benefits to attract and retain top talent. The role also involves advising line managers on effective recruitment processes and supporting them in making employment offers.
3. Learning and Development Coordination
This position involves identifying training needs and coordinating the implementation of the Workplace Skills Plan (WSP) across the division. The HR Consultant will ensure that employees’ Personal Development Plans are aligned with business objectives and that training interventions address skills gaps effectively. In addition, the HR Consultant will collaborate with Employee Relations and Remuneration teams to ensure seamless delivery of learning programs.
4. Employee Relations and Organizational Development
The HR Consultant will serve as a trusted advisor on employee relations matters, providing guidance on wellness services, job evaluation processes, and organizational development initiatives. The incumbent will also manage employee referrals, monitor progress, and contribute to the implementation of wellness programs. By facilitating the development of job profiles and evaluating organizational structures, the HR Consultant will ensure that HR processes support overall business growth and efficiency.
5. General HR Administration and Analytics
In this role, the HR Consultant will oversee general HR administration tasks, including managing employee relocations and terminations, ensuring compliance with HR policies, and maintaining data integrity in the HR system. The incumbent will use HR technology and systems such as SAP to extract data for HR reporting and decision-making. Analyzing exit interviews, compiling reports, and presenting findings to management will be part of the role’s core duties.
6. Stakeholder Management
The HR Consultant will establish strong partnerships with management, labor representatives, and employees to promote effective HR service delivery. By influencing adherence to HR policies and providing support in addressing performance issues, the incumbent will foster a positive and productive workplace environment. Additionally, the HR Consultant will collaborate with HR Specialists to promote best practices and enhance employee engagement.
Required Qualifications and Experience
The ideal candidate for this role should possess the following qualifications and experience:
- Educational Background: A Diploma or Degree (NQF 6/7) in Human Resources or a related discipline.
- Professional Membership: Membership with the South African Board for People Practices (SABPP) or the Institute of People Management (IPM) is recommended.
- Experience: A minimum of 3 years’ experience in a human resources environment, with exposure to a unionized environment being an added advantage.
- Knowledge and Skills: Thorough knowledge of HR processes, South African employment legislation, employee relations, and conflict resolution processes. The candidate should also be adept at using HR systems and technology for data extraction and reporting.
