Key Responsibilities
The Utilities Engineer will play a pivotal role in ensuring that essential utilities like steam, refrigeration, CO2, and compressed air are efficiently and reliably supplied to the end users within the plant. This includes overseeing the maintenance of critical utilities and improving the plant’s overall availability through maintenance best practices and the application of problem-solving tools.
In addition, the Utilities Engineer will be tasked with leading plant improvements, managing cost-saving projects, and driving the implementation of Voyager Plant Optimization (VPO) within the utilities plant. The role will also require leadership and management of the utilities artisans, ensuring that all team members adhere to the company’s safety standards and legal requirements.
Core Duties of the Utilities Engineer
1. Safety Leadership
The safety of the team is a top priority. The Utilities Engineer will ensure that the utilities team adheres to plant safety policies and procedures, as well as comply with OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) requirements. The engineer will proactively identify unsafe conditions or behaviors and take appropriate actions to resolve them. In addition, they will manage the implementation of Ammonia and Steam Process Safety Management (PSM) within the utilities sector of the plant.
2. Plant Reliability
A critical function of this role is to ensure the smooth and reliable operation of utilities systems through meticulous planning and execution of maintenance strategies. The Utilities Engineer will lead routine, corrective, preventative, and predictive maintenance activities. Additionally, the role involves the development of maintenance work instructions for utilities plants and ensuring that problem-solving tools are consistently applied by the team.
The engineer will also be responsible for leading the development of a reliability plan for the utilities plant, ensuring that the maintenance team has the required competencies to handle all operational challenges.
3. Plant Optimization
The Utilities Engineer will analyze plant performance data to identify areas for improvement and develop strategies to optimize plant performance. The role also requires the evaluation and implementation of cost-saving projects, including suggesting and implementing performance improvement initiatives within the utilities sector. As part of this, the engineer will be involved in evaluating new equipment and approving modifications to the plant infrastructure.
4. Team Leadership
Effective leadership is essential for ensuring a productive and motivated team. The Utilities Engineer will be responsible for conducting regular training needs analysis for the team and developing training plans to address skill gaps. They will also review team goals and conduct performance evaluations through One-on-One meetings to support personal and professional development.
Minimum Requirements
The ideal candidate for the position of Utilities Engineer at Newlands Brewery should meet the following qualifications and experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Chemical, Electrical, or Electromechanical)
- 3 to 5 years of operational and maintenance experience in a utilities plant
- In-depth knowledge of Refrigeration Plant, Steam Plant, Air Plant, and CO2 Plant
- Proven experience in managing and leading a team
- Ability to coach and build team capacity
- GCC (Government Certificate of Competency) in factories will be advantageous
- Category A&B Ammonia competence certificate is also an advantage
- Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to write concise technical and engineering reports
