    Founded in 2006, Sonke Gender Justice is a South African-based non-profit organisation dedicated to advancing women’s rights and achieving gender justice. Through a rights-based and gender-transformative approach, Sonke works to ensure that women, children, men, and gender non-conforming individuals enjoy equitable, caring, and healthy relationships. By strengthening the capacities of governments, civil society, and citizens, Sonke aims to prevent gender-based violence, reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS, and contribute to social justice and poverty elimination.

    Community Mobiliser Role Summary

    As a Community Mobiliser at Sonke Gender Justice, you will play a crucial role in mobilising communities, facilitating education and advocacy sessions, and supporting various gender justice initiatives. Your work will directly contribute to the prevention of gender-based violence, the promotion of gender equality, and the empowerment of women in the communities Sonke serves.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Community Mapping: Assist the Senior Trainer in conducting comprehensive community mapping in areas where Sonke’s interventions will be implemented.
    • Recruitment: Collaborate with the Senior Trainer to recruit participants for various programs, including women leadership and gender-based violence prevention interventions.
    • Community Action Teams and CBOs: Work closely with Community Action Teams (CAT) and other Community-Based Organisations to amplify the voices of women through the Inkanyezi project.
    • Community Mobilisation: Support community mobilisation efforts by identifying key youth settings, such as clubs and churches, and facilitating events and workshops.
    • Facilitation of Community Education: Assist in facilitating community education and mobilisation sessions, as well as other Sonke workshops aimed at empowering women and promoting gender equality.
    • IEC Talks: Co-conduct Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) talks with the Senior Trainer across various locations, distributing gender-based violence prevention materials.
    • Reporting: Timely collation and submission of activity reports to the Senior Trainer, ensuring transparency and accountability.
    • Administration: Adhere to Finance, Administration, and Procurement procedures, ensuring all requisitions, quotations, and payments are processed correctly.

    Requirements

    • Education: A Senior Certificate is required; a Diploma or higher education qualification is advantageous.
    • Experience: A minimum of 2 years’ experience in programmatic aspects related to HIV/AIDS, reproductive health, gender-based violence prevention, and community mobilisation.
    • Knowledge: Familiarity with the Public, Private, and NGO sectors in South Africa, and a deep understanding of gender equality, human rights, and violence prevention.

    Skills and Abilities

    • Facilitation and Presentation Skills: Ability to effectively conduct training sessions and present information clearly.
    • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact with diverse groups and report effectively.
    • Relationship Management: Strong ability to manage relationships at all levels within the community.
    • Time Management: Ability to prioritise tasks, meet deadlines, and work efficiently under pressure.
