    Dental Assistant Role Overview

    The Dental Assistant will play a crucial role in supporting dental professionals during general and specialized dental procedures. In addition, the role involves managing administrative tasks, ensuring proper sterilization of equipment, and maintaining a safe and hygienic environment for patients and staff.

    Key Responsibilities

    The Dental Assistant will be responsible for the following critical outputs:

    • Adhere to the scope of practice and stay updated on trends and advancements in the dental field.
    • Maintain accountability for decisions and actions taken in the course of care delivery.
    • Ensure compliance with sterilization protocols and infection control measures in the dental room.
    • Provide clinical assistance to dentists during procedures following branch protocols.
    • Coordinate laboratory-related tasks, including lab slips, collection, and casting.
    • Monitor and manage the availability of consumables and equipment in the dental room, ensuring economical usage.
    • Address and resolve concerns to promote safe dental practices.
    • Document patient care in line with policies and legal standards.
    • Maintain patient confidentiality, dignity, and safety at all times.
    • Dispose of medical waste, human tissue, and medicine according to legislative requirements.
    • Report equipment malfunctions to avoid risks to patients or staff.

    Qualifications and Requirements

    Candidates must meet the following criteria:

    • Education: Grade 12 certificate.
    • Training: Completion of an approved dental assisting course or equivalent training and experience.
    • Experience: Prior experience in a customer-focused service environment is advantageous.
    • Skills: Proficiency in MS Office, advanced knowledge of dental terminology, and a strong understanding of infection control and sterilization techniques.
    • Additional Skills: Familiarity with treatment codes used in dental quotations, specialized dental procedures, and GoodX software (advantageous).
    • Registration: Must be registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Registered Dental Assistant.
