About the Doctoral Studentship
CSIR has an exciting opportunity for a Doctoral Studentship in Open RAN in 5G networks and Beyond. This position is part of the Spectrum Access and Management Innovation (SAMI) research group, under the Networked Systems and Applications impact area, within the Next Generation Enterprises and Institutions Cluster.
The role involves original research and development in open RAN in 5G networks and beyond, with the position based in Pretoria, operating in a hybrid mode.

- Intelligent RAN Slicing: Investigating intelligent ways to slice RAN for different use cases and performance requirements.
- RAN Virtualisation: Emphasizing the virtualization of RAN components to improve network flexibility and scalability.

Responsibilities
- Research Proposal Preparation: Draft a research proposal approved by both CSIR and the university.
- Literature Review: Conduct a thorough literature review to outline the current state-of-the-art relevant to the research topic.
- Original Research: Perform original research to address identified open research problems.
- Publications: Produce high-quality, peer-reviewed publications based on the doctoral research topic.
- Thesis Compilation: Compile and defend the doctoral thesis successfully.
- Additional Contributions: Engage in additional activities relevant to the research group, limited to 20% of total time.
Qualifications, Skills, and Experience
- Educational Background: A Master’s degree in electronic/telecommunication/computer engineering, computer science, or a related field.
- Doctoral Registration: Must register for a doctoral qualification at a South African university (agreed upon with CSIR co-supervisor).
- International Qualifications: Require an evaluation report/certificate from the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).
- Network Knowledge: Strong background in computer/telecommunications networks, such as the OSI Model, wireless, and mobile communication networks (e.g., 4G and 5G).
- Technical Skills: Knowledge of digital signal processing, pattern recognition, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and related programming languages (e.g., Matlab, Octave, Python, Java, C++). Proficiency in the Linux operating system.
- Mathematical Modelling: Confident in mathematical modelling and evaluation both analytically and through computer simulation.
- Software Development: Experience in software development for experimentation and computer simulation.
- Scientific Method: Understanding of the scientific method, experimental design, critical result analysis, and knowledge dissemination.
- Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact efficiently with diverse teams.
- Publication Record: A good peer-reviewed publication record is advantageous.
