About the Role
The Field Guide at Marataba plays a vital role in creating unforgettable safari experiences. This position requires guiding guests on foot and by vehicle, delivering a holistic safari journey that encompasses wildlife tracking, ecological education, and an immersive connection to the natural surroundings. The Field Guide is also tasked with supporting the Safari Management through administrative duties and mentoring other field guides, ensuring the smooth operation of all guest-related services within the safari department.
Key Responsibilities
As part of the MORE Family Collection, the Field Guide will have various focus areas to guarantee the highest standards in guest experiences and departmental operations.
Core Duties:
- Safari Management: Responsible for organizing and leading individual, family, and children’s safari experiences, while ensuring adherence to all safety protocols and guest relations standards.
- Guest Engagement: Facilitate introductory and safety orientations for guests, deliver informative talks on local wildlife and ecology, and lead immersive game drives and bush walks.
- Administrative Support: Assist Safari Management with departmental operations, mentor junior guides, and take part in the upkeep and handling of equipment, vehicles, and other assets.
- Wildlife Education and Safety: Guide guests through educational activities such as spoor tracking, wildlife identification, and ecology-related lectures.
- Emergency Preparedness: Stay prepared to respond to emergencies, including medical incidents, fires, and other urgent situations.
- Social Media Contribution: Help manage and contribute content to the lodge’s social media platforms, sharing engaging insights about wildlife and lodge activities.
- Guest Preferences and Complaints Management: Actively engage with guests to gather feedback, address any complaints immediately, and record their preferences to enhance their stay.
Qualifications and Skills
The ideal candidate for this position will bring a unique blend of knowledge, experience, and passion for the wild, coupled with excellent communication skills and a dedication to delivering exceptional guest service. The requirements include:
- Educational Requirements: Level 2 FGASA Nature Site Guide NQF4, with a Full Trails Guide certification.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in ARH and rifle handling, First Aid Level 1 certification, and a valid driver’s license with Pr-DP.
- Professional Background: Prior experience as a Field Guide in a luxury safari lodge setting.
- Operational Knowledge: Familiarity with the property and company procedures, and an understanding of FGASA and MORE Guiding culture standards.
