Key Responsibilities
- Plant Availability: Ensure the plant operates efficiently, minimizing downtime and meeting the required availability targets.
- Process Improvement: Drive continuous improvement initiatives to benefit both the business and the plant’s operational efficiency.
- Compliance to OHS Act: Ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHS Act) by taking on GMR 2.7(a) appointment or GMR 2.1 appointment depending on your experience.
- Safety, Health, and Environment: Enforce health, safety, and environmental rules and regulations to maintain high standards of workplace safety and housekeeping.
- Team Leadership: Oversee the training and development of the mechanical team to ensure a high level of competency and professionalism.
- Technical Support: Provide technical support to the plant, driving compliance with engineering codes and standards.
- Project Management: Implement capital and operational projects to enhance plant operations.
- Engineering Integration: Integrate various engineering disciplines to optimize plant performance.
- Training and Mentoring: Train and mentor technicians, candidates, and process teams to foster a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
- Maintenance Best Practices: Apply sound maintenance principles, including the implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Standard Engineering Procedures (SEPs).
- Failure Analysis: Conduct failure and process analyses, providing detailed reports to improve plant reliability.
- Planning and Scheduling: Lead the planning and scheduling of plant maintenance activities, identifying and implementing continuous improvement initiatives.
- Specialized Knowledge: Utilize your detailed knowledge of steel rolling, proportional hydraulics, and rotating equipment to ensure the smooth operation of the plant.
- Communication: Be proficient in both written and verbal communication, effectively conveying information to team members and other stakeholders.
Requirements
To qualify for this exciting role at Safal Steel, you will need to meet the following criteria:
- Education:
- A BEng / BSc degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent (NQF7/8 or NQF8/10).
- A GCC (Government Certificate of Competency) for Factories and Professional Registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) as a Professional Engineer (Pr. Eng) will be advantageous.
- Registration with SAIMech is also preferred.
- Experience:
- A minimum of 3 years of work experience post-ECSA approved Candidate Engineering Programme is required.
- Preferred candidates will have at least 10 years of post-qualification experience in the steel or related heavy industries.
- Skills:
- Proficiency in Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
- Strong computer literacy in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, MS Projects).
- Knowledge of maintenance best practices, mechanical systems, and engineering standards.
