The City of Cape Town invites young, dynamic, and dedicated individuals to apply for a rewarding learnership opportunity in Road Traffic Law Enforcement. The Metro Police and Traffic Learnership is a program aimed at providing practical and academic training for those eager to enter the law enforcement field, specifically in the road traffic sector. The 18-month learnership offers participants the chance to gain hands-on experience and valuable certifications, with training provided by the Public Safety Training College.

    Who is Eligible to Apply?

The learnership is designed for unemployed youth aged 18 to 34, who meet the required qualifications. The program is specifically looking for candidates who are passionate about law enforcement and who meet the following eligibility criteria:

    • Age: Applicants must be between 18 and 34 years of age.
    • Education: A Grade 12 qualification (matric) is a mandatory requirement, and documentary proof must be submitted.
    • Residency: Candidates must be permanent residents within the jurisdiction of Cape Town, and proof of residency is required.
    • Language Proficiency: Applicants should be proficient in English and at least one other official language.
    • Health and Fitness: Since the training involves strenuous physical activities, applicants must be medically and physically fit to undergo such training. They must be aware of their health status and capabilities before arriving for fitness assessments.
    • Criminal Record: Applicants should have no criminal record. A background check will be conducted as part of the selection process.
    • Driver’s License: A valid driving license (minimum Code B) is required.

Key Details of the Metro Police and Traffic Learnership Programme

The learnership runs for 18 months, from June 2025 to November 2026, and participants will be trained in Road Traffic Law Enforcement at the Public Safety Training College. During this period, learners will be required to successfully complete both the Further Education and Training Certificate in Road Traffic Law Enforcement as well as a Law Enforcement Skills Program. This training will equip participants with the necessary skills to operate effectively in road traffic law enforcement roles.

    Key Benefits of the Program

    • Stipend: Successful learners will receive a stipend of R34.91 per hour during their training.
    • Skill Development: Learners will gain in-depth knowledge and practical experience in traffic law enforcement, making them highly competitive in the field.
    • Job Prospects: Although there is no guarantee of permanent employment after the completion of the learnership, successful completion of the program opens doors for potential job opportunities in various law enforcement roles.

    Fitness and Health Requirements

Given the physically demanding nature of the job, all applicants must undergo a series of fitness tests as part of the selection process. These fitness tests include the following:

    1. 2.4 km Run: Males must complete the run in 11 minutes, and females in 13 minutes.
    2. Push-Ups: A one-minute test requiring both males and females to perform 30 push-ups within 60 seconds.
    3. Sit-Ups: A one-minute test requiring both males and females to perform 30 sit-ups within 60 seconds.
    4. Dead Load Carry: Applicants must carry two 25kg weights over a 100m distance.

These tests are designed to assess the candidates’ physical stamina, agility, and overall fitness levels. Applicants who fail any of these tests will be eliminated from further consideration. Given the high physical requirements, pregnant individuals will not be allowed to undergo the physical assessments.

Apart from passing the fitness tests, shortlisted candidates will be required to complete several additional assessments and undergo checks. These include:

    • No Tattoos Visible in Uniform: Applicants must not have tattoos that are visible when wearing the service uniform.
