    Research Nurse Role Overview

    The Research Nurse will be responsible for performing clinical procedures on research participants while adhering to protocol requirements and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines. The selected candidate will work closely with medical officers, study coordinators, and laboratory staff to ensure that all research-related clinical procedures are conducted effectively.

    Minimum Requirements

    To be eligible for this position, candidates must meet the following requirements:

    • A degree or diploma in Nursing (General, Community, or Psychiatry).
    • Active registration as a Professional Nurse with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
    • At least 2-3 years of nursing experience in a clinical or research setting.
    • Proficiency in phlebotomy techniques.
    • A strong understanding of study protocols and regulations.
    • Knowledge of HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
    • Excellent computer literacy, with skills in email communication, Microsoft Word, Excel, and internet usage.
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written).
    • The ability to work effectively under pressure and adapt to changing conditions.
    • A client-focused approach, with the ability to work harmoniously with people from diverse backgrounds and identities.
    • Strong time management and organizational skills.
    • A high level of confidentiality in handling participant information.
    • Willingness to work on COVID-related studies.

    Preferred Qualifications and Skills

    While not mandatory, the following qualifications and experience will be considered an added advantage:

    • 1-2 years of nursing experience in primary healthcare clinics.
    • Fluency in both English and isiXhosa.
    • Certification in Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
    • Basic life support certification.
    • Experience with Point-of-Care (POC) testing, including HIV rapid tests and pregnancy tests.

    Key Responsibilities

    The Research Nurse will be required to perform a variety of clinical and administrative tasks to ensure the smooth running of research projects. Key responsibilities include:

    Clinical Duties

    • Performing clinical observations and procedures according to research protocols, including blood draws, swabs, vital signs monitoring, injections, infusions, IUCD or Implanon insertions (if certified), and operating infusion pumps.
    • Assisting the Medical Officer and other clinical staff with study procedures.
    • Ensuring that clinical areas and equipment are well maintained.
    • Advising participants on basic medical conditions.
    • Managing triage processes for participants experiencing adverse events.
    • Overseeing participant visits to ensure smooth and efficient study procedures.
    • Conducting participant interviews and counselling as per study protocols.
    • Coordinating sample collection and management, ensuring adherence to cold chain protocols.

    Administrative and Research Duties

    • Assisting with scheduling, screening, consenting, enrolment, and follow-up of research participants, including conducting home visits if necessary.
    • Transcribing research data into case report forms.
    • Informing study coordinators of daily clinic progress.
    • Assisting with inventory management, ordering supplies, and equipment maintenance.
    • Participating in meetings, training, and conference calls related to the study.
