The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Office (ESARO) is offering a unique full-time internship opportunity in Johannesburg, South Africa. The role of Policy and Programme Support Intern is based at the Middle Income Country Hub (MIC-Hub), serving a select group of middle income countries in Southern Africa including Botswana, Eswatini, Mauritius, Namibia, Seychelles, and South Africa.

This internship, lasting six months from mid-August 2025, provides an exceptional chance for young graduates and postgraduate students to gain hands-on experience in international development, policy research, and programme advisory services.

    About the Internship Role

The Policy and Programme Support Intern will work under the direct supervision of the Head of the MIC-Hub at ESARO. The intern will provide crucial support in policy research and development, assisting with programme advisory services aimed at enhancing sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), gender equality, and broader population and development issues in the region.

    Key responsibilities include:

    • Monitoring trends and developments in political, social, and economic environments relevant to SRHR and gender equality in the designated middle income countries.
    • Contributing to the preparation of policy briefs, reports, and research outputs aligned with the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) Programme of Action.
    • Assisting in the development, implementation, and evaluation of technical cooperation programmes, with a focus on sustainable financing and national development planning.
    • Supporting the organization of trainings, consultations, meetings, and conferences as per the MIC-Hub’s annual work plan.
    • Performing other tasks as needed by the MIC-Hub and ESARO.
