About the Institute
The Institute for Social and Health Sciences (ISHS) is a leading Africa-focused institution dedicated to excellence in social and health sciences. It houses the South African Medical Research Council-Unisa Violence, Injury, and Social Asymmetries Research Unit (VISARU), which addresses violence and injury as major contributors to the nation’s health challenges. VISARU engages in multi-disciplinary research to understand and mitigate the impact of socio-structural factors on vulnerable populations.
Key Responsibilities
- Research Support:
- Assist in shaping the research agenda of the Head of Institute.
- Identify and engage in research activities aligned with the Head of Institute’s focus.
- Develop and contribute to research proposals and collaborative projects.
- Participate in research interest groups and contribute to funding proposals for VISARU projects.
- Oversee research administration and contribute to academic outputs, including peer reviews and co-authorship.
- Community Engagement:
- Build partnerships with communities to leverage research expertise for their benefit.
- Promote a culture of networking and engagement with institutional, national, and international bodies.
Requirements
- Educational Qualifications:
- Honours degree or equivalent NQF level 8 qualification in a relevant field.
- At least one accredited research output in the last five years or co-authorship within the last three years.
- Skills and Competencies:
- Proficient in MS Office Suite and research software (e.g., SPSS, Atlas.ti).
- Strong understanding of research methodology.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Valid driver’s license; own transport is highly recommended.
- Ability to work beyond regular office hours if necessary.
Additional Recommendations
- Ability to work independently and in a collaborative research environment.
- Demonstrated planning and organizational skills.
- Experience in multi-, inter-, and trans-disciplinary research.
